April 13, 2019, Day of Action, Laredo, Texas
The greatest musician of our generation performs the most profound of all classical music: the six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach.
In a special concert, YO-YO MA performs all six of J.S. Bach’s Suites for Solo Cello, music that has given him, in his own words, “sustenance, comfort and joy during times of stress, celebration and loss.”
“These six works are the Everest of his instrument’s repertory, offering a guide to nearly everything a cello can do — as well as, many believe, charting a remarkably complete anatomy of emotion and aspiration.”
– The New York Times
This concert is part of his two-year global initiative comprising 36 performances of the Bach Suites across six continents, with what he calls “days of action,” seeking “to put culture in action by bringing people together to address pressing social issues” and “invite all of us to think differently about the role of culture in society.”
