The Golden Age of Art Celebrating 100 Years of the Ballets Russes
From 1913, when it first assaulted the senses, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring was considered virtually impossible to perform, a major challenge even to virtuoso orchestras. The audacious ballet depicts the ceremonies of a prehistoric Slavic tribe, among them a sacrificial ritual during which a maiden dances herself to death to appease the gods. The ballet was so radical that its opening was fraught with scandal. The world-renowned The Joffrey Ballet has revived this unforgettable ballet with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky.
