Mejia Ballet International’s program, “Romeo and Juliet,” will feature choreographer Paul Mejia’s most popular works: “Jeux” set to music by Claude Debussy, Serenade in A set to music by Igor Stravinsky, “Café Victoria” set to the tango “Contrabajisimo” by Astor Piazzolla and “Romeo and Juliet” set to Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture."
Russian prima ballerina Olga Pavlova graduated from the famed Bolshoi Ballet Academy and has toured in more than 30 countries and danced principal roles in 54 ballets. Pavlova’s lyricism and warmth are wonderfully suited to the ill-fated Juliet. Dance Magazine has noted that “She moves . . . with fluidity and a guarded sexual energy.” Pavlova was named DFW Weekly Critics Choice Ballerina for Juliet in Mejia’s “Romero and Juliet.”
Artistic Director and Choreographer Paul Mejia joined the School of American Ballet in 1958. Mejia joined the New York City Ballet in 1964, and danced principal roles in many of George Balanchine's ballets. The New York Times has called Mejia’s choreography, “Fluent and sophisticated in his approach to movement.”
